Education Tax Refund - Keep Your Receipts!

Education Tax Refund - Keep Your Receipts!

Last year, $400 million in tax benefits went unclaimed by parents of school children for education expenses. This year, parents are being urged to keep their receipts for tax time to alleviate the financial burden that back to school expenses place on many parents. The Australian government's Education Tax Refund (ETR) scheme provides up to 50% back on a range of children's school expenses for both primary and senior school students. With a need for new school books, textbooks, uniforms and other equipment, the back-to-school period puts on a strain on many parents purse strings. So make sure you understand how you can claim back up to 50% of your child's education expenses come tax time.- What can I claim? Under the ETR, parents can claim on education expenses including home and personal laptops, computer related equipment, internet connections, computer repairs, educational computer software, school textbooks, learning related texts, and stationary. For a comprehensive list on what is claimable see educationtaxrefund.Gov.Au/what-can-i-claim.Html.- What is the maximum amount I can claim? For the 2010-11 financial year, the maximum amount you can claim is $794 of expenses for primary school children, receiving a maximum refund of $397.For secondary school children you can claim $1,588 in expenses receiving a maximum refund of $794 per child.- What about school uniforms? Kids' school uniforms purchased after July 1 2011 will for the first time be included in the ETR.Parents will be able to claim on uniform costs for the 2011-12 financial year.- NB. To claim money back on education expenses, parents must keep their receipts in order to calculate your refund and to have them on hand as proof of purchase. The ETR is the government's way of helping with the costs of educating children, so make sure you make the most of this tax-refund scheme. You'll halve the costs of textbooks, computers and in the future Australian school uniforms, which will relieve the financial burden of educating your children. Are you keeping your receipts?

How Does an Octopus Move?

How Does an Octopus Move?

The octopus belongs to a subclass of cephalopods. They are symmetric, with two eyes and four pairs of the arms (the reason they have got the name octopus, which means eight).Even though the octopus is a cephalopod, it is very different from its relatives such as oysters and snails. It is more closely related to the squid. The octopus doesn't have a shell; it has a hard beak, with its mouth at the centre.Since they don't have a skeleton they can squeeze through narrow places and their favourite location is coral reefs. If you meet an octopus under the water, move away as fast as possible. They might not look dangerous, but there is one kind of octopus, the blue ringed octopus, which is deadly. For self defence, they hide, flee fast, expel ink or they can even use colour changing camouflage. The octopus can change its colour from red to grey, yellow, dark or greenish. At their back they have a kind of muscular siphon.Water comes in the siphon, and the octopus takes the oxygen from it.This sucking siphon helps it to move fast through the water. The octopus expels a strong jet of water, which helps it to bounce back.In that way, the octopus can run away from a predator which has come too close. The octopus moves by crawling and swimming. When they want to travel slowly, they tend to crawl with some swimming. When they are helped by the jet propulsion, they move really fast, but even then they use swimming and walking. When they crawl, they actually walk on their arms.Usually they use many legs at once, on solid and soft surfaces.Recent research from 2005 showed that some octopus can walk on two arms. This way of moving (locomotion) helps octopus to flee from a potential predator. However, moving helps the octopus to catch its prey as well. The octopus eats mostly crabs and fish, but when it is hungry it catches everything. For eating, the octopus uses its strong jaws, which look like the beak of a parrot. It can bite strongly and at the same time it injects its poison. The poisonous liquid helps it in disabling its prey and its long arms, although they make the octopus look unusual with its sucking holes, it is with these it grabs its prey and squeezes it firmly.

Multicultural Dolls for the Contemporary Collector

Multicultural Dolls for the Contemporary Collector

Gone are the days when all of the dolls in the store looked like they had European ancestry, they had very light skin and blond hair.Today dolls come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. With world-wide communication, the internet, and people moving from one country to another multiculturalism during play time can be a prelude to adult live. Thus it is extremely important for children of all ages to be exposed to dolls from around the world instead of being limited to dolls that "look like them." Multicultural dolls make fantastic displays and decorations and even add to your home's ambiance.Exposing a child to one culture could make it difficult for them to adapt to a multicultural society when they enter college and the work world.Doll artists, designers, and manufactures like Madame Alexander, American Girl, Barbie, Bratz, and many others develop collectible dolls in many different cultures.Children collecting multicultural dolls will help them to learn that the differences between people makes us better in that we are all special in our own way.Playing with and having a multicultural doll collection will provide our young doll collectors with the tools necessary to learn what multiculturalism is all about.Multicultural dolls currently in demand include but are not limited to the following dolls. African American.Chinese.English.French.German.Hispanic.Japanese.Native American.Russian.In the past doll collecting was thought of as being something that adolescent girls did, while today adults are collecting dolls in growing numbers and not just the fairer sex but men are also getting involved.Multicultural doll collections are teaching adult collectors about the people of different nationalities that they confront in the business world daily.Collectible dolls from Russia, China, and Japan can not only be found wearing costumes of today but of the past. Many of the Russian dolls available today represent Russian history and culture.Bobblehead dolls date back to ancient Japan and China where they were made of flexible bamboo strips. The dolls of China and Japan make exquisite gifts such as the Geisha, Samurai warrior, and Emperor dolls of Japan in their ornate costumes.Chinese dolls depict many aspects of the Chinese life, its literary characters, royalty of various dynasties, and their life events.Native American dolls represent early American history during the early days of our country. These dolls represent tribal life, with their bright, vibrant, and colorful clothing that reflects the life that each tribe depicts. They are dressed in buckskin with brilliant beadwork and fringe.Indian bride dolls are adorned with a myriad of color, texture, beauty, and jewelry.Young collectors must be very careful when handling these dolls so that they won't lose any of the small accessories attached to their costumes.Deciding on what cultural dolls to add to a collection can be quite a task and should not be done without a lot of thought and research.
